A [ WILD ] Weekend

Labor Day weekend is usually one for resting and relaxing, but not at the Puplis household.  We - and by "we" I mean Joe and a troop of wonderful volunteers - took advantage of the long weekend to complete a home project that was needing to be done.

Joe and my dad began work Thursday morning.  There were 3 layers of shingles - which isn't even legal - that needed to come off before they could begin laying the new shingles.

Later in the day my brother Mike came to lend a hand.  Here he shows off his "Quality Builders" shirt, which may very well be as old as our roof.

Claire - cute as a button - was no help at all.
Here she sits and watches the action while looking at books.

Thankfully, Friday, more help arrived.
Pictured above are Joe's longtime friend, Rob (on the left),
and his boss and chess buddy from school, Johan (on the right).

Joe's Uncle Ron and my dad tackle the gable, a tricky task.

Amazingly, the volunteers returned Saturday despite
the sweltering heat they were expecting.

I think the only reason they stayed was because we bribed them with food!

The women were busy preparing food and taking care of the kids.
Here they wait for the men to finish eating before they tidy up again.

But not only did they tidy up the inside, they worked hard outside as well.
Casey, finished with his work on the roof, helped his wife Laura, and my sister-in-law, Laura, clean up a monstrous pile of shingles.

Even the kids were helping.  Gracie, Sylvia and Andrew were using a large magnet to find nails that had fallen on the ground.

Casey and Laura's son, Wesley, on the other hand, refused to lift a finger.  I showed him some work to be done, but he gave me this look that said, "Who me?"

Joe's dad and Grandma Puplis stopped by for moral support,
and I was able to snap a quick picture of them.

Saturday afternoon, while the volunteers toiled under the sun to repair our roof, Laura and I took the kids to the zoo.  While it's quite literally a walk through the park compared to what the men were doing, Laura and I found it still wasn't easy lugging around 5 kids on a hot day.  Nevertheless, we had a lot of fun.

The kids lined up to see some wildlife.

Henry enjoyed his stroll through the zoo.

Giddy up!

Claire, Gracie, and Andrew aboard the toy train.

To Henry, any animal with fur is a dog,
even the gorillas he's pointing to in this picture.

A quick stop at the petting zoo.

Claire's favorite animal - the bear.

Pretending to be scared of the bear.

Glad the kids are having fun, but do they notice
the mountain lion right in front of their faces?

Monday morning, Joe and my dad finished up the last bit of the roof.
What an accomplishment!

A BIG THANKS TO

My dad for taking on such a project - not because he enjoys roofing, but because he loves us.
My mom for providing food for the workers and for helping with the kids.
Joe's dad for providing yummy pizza for the work crew Saturday evening.
Joe's mom for watching the kids Thursday so I could help with the roof.
The Sternberg family. Mike - for sacrificing your weekend to help with our roof. Laura - for helping with the kids; I couldn't have done it without you.  Sylvia, Gracie, and Andrew - for being such great cousins to Claire and Henry.
Uncle Ron - aka Mr. Roof - for helping tackle the tough tasks, and for being an all-around awesome uncle!
Casey, Laura and Wes Koopmans for always pitching in and lending a hand.  You all are so gracious, sharing your time and abilities.  We're so glad you now live in Grand Rapids!
John Youngs for adding so much liveliness to the day. How dull it would be without you here to banter with Uncle Ron.
Rob Kamrath for risking your life without health insurance to climb up on our roof and share your expertise.
Johan Linna for your unexpected but very welcome visit, your effort and your theological musings.
Abdul for your willingness to do the unpleasant work of loading up the shingles. We are glad to have had you here.

A Couple More...

Oops, a couple cute pictures I forgot to post from our quick trip to WI.

On our way home.

Exhausted from a fun weekend,
Claire didn't quite make it to her bedroom.

Quick Trip

Our home has been a flurry of activity lately, and I'm behind on my blogging responsibilities, so in an effort to catch up, I thought I would do a quick post of my quick trip to Wisconsin a couple weekends ago.

Joe was working all weekend, so I took the opportunity to pack up the kids and visit my sister and her lovely family.  It worked out wonderfully that my younger sister and mom could also make the trip.

The kids love visiting their Uncle Shawn, Aunt Katie and, of course, Ruby Jean!

We arrived just in time for lunch on Saturday, then spent the afternoon and evening playing games and catching up.

Uncle Shawn knows just what Claire likes!

Kelsey and Ruby

Henry spent much of the day pushing this stroller around their home.

Both kids were fascinated by Marmaduke, their pet hamster.

Grandma and Ruby rest on the couch.

Ruby is growing up way too quickly, so I'm grateful for any chance we get to visit with her.  We can't wait to see her and her mommy again when they come into town in a few weeks!

Summer Fun

It's been a fun summer with the kids.  Admittedly, I had high ambitions for our sunny season.  Last summer we were at the hospital nearly all day, every day, so I was determined to enjoy all that this year had to offer.  Here's a glimpse of the fun we've had over the last couple months.

Enjoying the lake.

Henry is climbing, and more recently walking, all over the place!

Claire loves to spot the butterflies whenever we drive past the Veteran's Home,
so we decided to take a walk there and see them up close.

Claire gives Henry a check up after a minor bout of the flu.

Claire proudly displays her 4th of July craft.

The library ran a program this summer where kids could read to a dog.  Both kids loved it!  And is it just me or is that dog smiling in the top right picture?

Henry hanging out with second cousin, Nolan.

The first and last time Claire offered to change Henry's diaper.

Family date night in downtown Rockford.

Cuddling with Daddy.

Happy Henry!

Claire eating raw corn on the cob she grabbed off the kitchen counter.

Claire enjoys caring for her vegetables that she's growing in her greenhouse.  Now the trick will be to convince her to eat them!

Henry's first haircut.
This picture captures well how he felt about the situation.

My baby growing before my very eyes!

Hope you all are enjoying your summer as well.  Sweater weather will be here before you know it, so get out and enjoy that summer sunshine while you can!

My Messy Life

Before I had children I expected that a stay-at-home mother should have the cleanest house on the block.  I mean, you're home all day with the kids.  You have all the time in the world to clean, right?

Well, after three years of life at home with the kids, I just need to vent that it is nearly impossible to keep our house clean.  Especially when the weather doesn't allow for much outdoor play, it seems my days are spent trying to keep our home from drowning in a perpetual wave of toys and clutter.

Our kids are cute, but they are chaos in motion.

Henry is the cupboard king.
He loves getting into the cupboards, especially those he's not supposed to be in.
Claire, in the background, is "baking a cake".
She loves to get water from the sink and concoct her own recipes.

Part of the problem is that Claire doesn't see a mess.  She sees art.

And for Henry, a clean room is a blank canvas.
He doesn't see a mess.  He sees endless entertainment.

And then we have the problem of what I consider to be well-intentioned messiness.

Claire shows off the "make-up" she put on with markers all by herself.

And, of course, her fingernail and toenail polish.

Here she colored me a picture on the bathroom door.  I couldn't possibly get upset, though, because she was so proud and said it was a Mother's Day gift for me.
Well, it's the thought that counts, even if it's 3 months late.

This, however, was the final straw.  After Claire's naptime art explosion, all markers were placed out of reach, only to be used under adult supervision.

Truthfully, I'd never trade my kids for a clean and clutter-free home.  They can be a lot of work, but at the end of the day, I go into their bedrooms and peek in on them while they sleep. And I am reminded once again of how much I love them.

Yeah, they're totally worth it!

First bike ride of the year! And George's first time without training wheels! Such a champ! Enjoyed lots of bike rides during quarantine...
